Children’s programme in West Bengal
Poornatha Foundation along with Future Shine Academy, organised a children’s programme with a participation of 47 children on 4th and 5th January, 2024 in Kakramadi, Murshidabad district, West Bengal. Cleaning up of school premises, decoration of the school, poster making, games. sessions on capacity building, personal hygiene and handwashing practices were the main features of the two-day programme. Mr. Nawaj Serif, representing Poornatha Foundation coordinated the programme















Republic Day celebration In Mumbai
On 26th January 2024, Poornatha Foundation had organised a special event for children along with Republic Day celebration at Chembur, Mumbai. Volunteers of Poornatha Foundation namely Rekha and Randive mobilised around 55 participants for the event. There were cultural programmes, drawing and musical chair competitions and outdoor games including leg race and other sports activities. Winners of various competitions were given prizes
Republic Day celebration in Navi Mumbai
In connection with Republic Day celebration, Poornatha Foundation had organised a day of games and cultural activities such as running race, musical chair for children and fashion show for women at Kharghar in Navi Mumbai on 26th January 2024. There were around 70 participants for the event including children. Mr. Madan More and Ms. Shalini More of Poornatha Foundation hosted the programme and gave away prizes to the winners













International Women’s Day Celebration, Kerala
Department of Demography, University of Kerala, Demography and Health Research Centre (DHRC), Kerala, and Poornatha Foundation, Mumbai jointly observed International Women’s Day on 7th March 2024, at University of Kerala. Dr. P. Mohanachandran Nair, General Secretary of DHRC, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Demography and the Vice president of Poornatha Foundation welcomed the gathering and Dr. Anil Chandran, Head of the Department of Demography, delivered the presidential address. Dr. P. S. Sreekala, Director of the Kerala Knowledge Economy Mission, highlighted the challenges and discrimination that women encounter, importance of providing equal positions and opportunities in development activities and monitoring and evaluating programs implemented by the United Nations for women. Dr. Suja Kurup, Professor at the Institute of English, University of Kerala, highlighted the pivotal role of women in shaping society. Dr. Seema Jerome, Professor and Head of the Department of Malayalam at the University of Kerala, centered her discussion on the lack of awareness among women regarding laws and policies concerning them even in digital age. The event concluded with the vote of thanks by Dr. Vinitha Thilakan, faculty at Karuna Medical College, Palakkad and the Secretary of Poornatha Foundation,
International Women's Day, Navi Mumbai
International Women’s Day was celebrated at Kharghar , Navi Mumbai on 8th March 2024 . There were 70 participants for the event including 25 children. Essay competition and musical chair were conducted. The theme for essay competition was ‘mother’. Prizes were distributed. The event was organised by Ms. Shalini More of Poornatha Foundation








Essay and Rangoli Competition, Navi Mumbai
Essay writing and rangoli design making competition was organised by Ms. Shalini More of Poornatha Foundation in Kharghar on 17th March 2024. Around 40 children participated in the competition. Prizes were given to the winning contestants
Eye camp, Mumbai
Poornatha Foundation had collaborated with Sankara Eye hospital, Panvel in organising an eye camp on 22nd March 2024 at Maharashtra Nagar, Chembur. There were 87 beneficiaries who had availed the service of the medical camp






Safety measures for children
A brief session on safety measures was conducted for children on 3rd September 2024 at Maharashtra Nagar. The interactive session was attended by 21 children
Ganesh festival
As part of Ganesh festival a time of fun filled activities like drawing and singing were organised on 12th September 2024 in the slum community at Maharashtra Nagar




Session on Dementia
An online session on dementia was organised by Poornatha Foundation on 20th October 2024. Dr. Vinitha Thilakan discussed dementia focusing on 3 important aspects like causes, symptoms and management.
DEMENTIA , an alphabetic representation of the cause can be
D- Drugs
E- Emotional depression
M- Metabolic/toxic
E- Eyes or ears failing
N- Normal pressure hydrocephalus
T- Trauma
I- Infection ( HIV, Syphilis…)
A- Anemia ( B12, folate)
Discussion centred on Dementia observed that dementia is commonly seen in older population, in post-retirement phase when there is a loss of sense of direction in life and inability to sustain interest which becomes difficult with ageing. Some of the early symptoms manifested are forgetfulness, unable to perform normal routine, confusion in math and other functions, disorder, losing coordination of physical and cognitivefaculties. Early diagnosis helps in managing dementia by lifestyle, environmental and nutritional modifications. In order to strengthen ones memory, it is effective to pause and reflect for a brief time daily and practicing some brain games which enhance memory, recollection and coordination of mental and physical faculties
Causes and Prevention of Stroke
An online session on causes and prevention of stroke was held on 9th November., 2024
Dr. Vinitha Thilakan while explaining the process of stroke a non communicable disease she spoke of 2 types namely ischemic stroke symptomatic with formation of blood clot which is common and haemorrhage with bursting of blood vessels
Some of the risk factors of stroke are observed to be genetically and ethnically connected which are non-modifiable while modifiable ones are linked to behavioral factors associated with diet, physical activity and addiction to substances like alcohol cigarettes and internet
Diet high in salt, sugar and fat increases the risk of hypertension, diabetes and cholesterol, . Stress , sleep deprivation leading to inflammation pose risk of stroke .
DASH diet (dietary approach to stop hypertension) is recommended wherein sodium, sugat and fat intake is curtailed.
Signs of stroke referred as BEFAST,
B- balance issues , coordination problem in movement
E-Eye sight where there’s is sudden blurred vision, double vision or loss of vision
F- Face , drooping of face, numbness
A- Arms unable to lift arms , drooping to one side
S- Speech, slurring of speech, expressive (unable to understand or non coherence )and motor aphasia when the person is not able to articulate
T- Time ,timely responding by calling an ambulance for rushing the person for medical help
Prevention
Lifestyle modifications starting right from the womb , early childhood with a lifecycle approach, environmental modification in education, work as primordial preventive measures
Physical activities like brisk walk for total 150 mins a week/30 mins 5 days is useful to keep hypertension under control thereby reducing the chances of stroke.
Risk assessment approach by grassroots workers such as ANMs and ASHA workers can help in community based assessment of high risk factors associated with stroke
Dr. Joy provided valuable insights on stroke and advancing age.. Elasticity of blood vessels of young people becomes rigid with aging leading to reduced flow of blood and higher risk of stroke. To avoid this hydration plays a vital role
Other inputs from participants included consumption of nuts, citrus fruits and those rich in fibre such as pomegranate, grapes with seeds, apple, tomato and other vegetables to stay healthy







Children's Day celebration Karjat
Children’s Day was celebrated on 14th November at Khadakwadi, Pashane village in Karjat, Raigad district. 54 children participated in various events like drawing, speech and singing competition. Prizes were distributed to the winners by Mr Dyaneshwar, the Gramsevak and Mr Jayvant Vishe, the Patil of the village. School teachers Yogesh sir and Manohar sir were present for the programme.All the children were provided with drawing materials and snacks
Children's Day Celebration Kolhapur
On 14th Nov,2024 around 100 to 120 students were gathered to celebrate Children’s Day. They were felicitated with certificates and awards were given to those who won prizes. Refreshments were served after the programme.
